Here's Hoping on a Historic Day

"While we breathe, we hope" Barack Obama (victory speech)

There is no doubt that it is an historic day. I distinctly remember, as a child, asking my father whether Jesse Jackson would be President and he assured me that a black person would never be President of the US.

What's more, I'm pretty confident he wont start attacking other countries at will or ignoring the environmental crisis.

I really do hope that he represents a great stride forward in the fight against poverty and inequality around the world. But I am (unsurprisingly) cynical about the Messianic hopes placed in him. It didn't seem that long ago that the Blair election victory was spoken about in similar terms. Power corrupts and it certainly tests character. Only time will tell what kind of man he really is. Occasionally really inspiring leaders come along - like Mandela - but they are rare. I doubt many of us would fare too well under the kinds of pressures he will face. Maybe it is our responsibility as Christians to commit to praying for him.
